“Coming to Catapult I always feel welcomed and encouraged to explore my boundaries. I have full creative freedom, which is so rare. The team at Catapult have no agenda, so I can really allow my work to form organically and honestly. Furthermore, myself and my dancers know that paid contemporary dance work is few and far between in the current Australian artistic climate, so I can sense that they really approach the rehearsal process with an eagerness to create and gratefulness to the development.”

Catapult Dance’s community initiative fosters community appreciation for contemporary dance through schools workshops, evening classes, community projects, participation and performances regionally, nationally and internationally.

As a regional composer, Catapult has given me valuable opportunities through all their programs that I would not have been granted elsewhere. These are absolutely fundamental to my development as a post tertiary composer. These experiences facilitated my creative portfolio, developed networks and further my compositional ability. As such, without the support, mentoring and encouragement of Catapult my passion for dance composition – would not have been a reality.”

James Hazel: COMPOSER

Catapult respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of the Country on which we Dance the Awabakal and Worimi peoples. We acknowledge the spiritual connections and relationships that traditional custodians have continued to maintain and strengthen since time began, which will continue well into the future. We acknowledge elders past, present and emerging. We extend this respect, acknowledge and appreciate the value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists contribute across our organisation, recognising their skills and experiences as a foundational asset to support the people of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Lower Hunter region.
